Tips for Breastfeeding in Public

When I had our first baby, I was terrified to breastfeed in public. I was incredibly awkward and looked like a FOOL getting underneath those nursing covers. Once I had my second child, I was much more comfortable with breastfeeding in public but I still dreaded the “nursing cover” that pulls over your head. It tends to make things awkward and I didn’t like that there was minimal airflow under there. Through the years I have gotten much better at putting together breastfeeding friendly styles that don’t require a nursing cover and allow you to nurse with as little or as much coverage as YOU are personally comfortable with. Some like no cover at all and most of the time, I am that person! But there may be certain locations where you want to conceal completely and I am going to give you some tips and tricks to get you more comfortable with breastfeeding in public!

My most important tip: Do NOT stay at home because you are nervous to nurse in public. SO many mamas out there nurse in public and you won’t be more comfortable until you try! Get some fresh air, I promise you won’t regret it!

Tip #2: Find a really great cardigan and stick with it for life.

When I wear a cardigan, I always wear a nursing friendly tank or tee underneath. With today’s outfit, I put on a basic white tank over my naked tank! Alternatively, throw on a wrap style tee, button down henley or just a basic tank and wrap a scarf around the midsection! The options really are endless and it makes breastfeeding in style so much easier!

Tip #3: When in a restaurant or coffee shop (etc), find the corner table.

It’s much easier to have a bit of space around you and be in the corner where you will be exposed to less people (if you are more concerned with concealing)! I am at the point where I will nurse anywhere and everywhere and you may get there too! ��

Tip #4: If you can’t find a chair or spot to nurse, there’s always the car!

I find myself more often than not, nursing in the car! It’s super easy and you can blast the AC/heat as needed in there too ��

Tip #5: If you find that someone is staring at you, offer them a nice big smile back.

You HAVE the RIGHT to breastfeed anywhere you please. Don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise. I personally haven’t had anyone ever say anything to me OR stare at me in the 2+ years that I have breastfed all my babies. It’s very common practice! ��

Tip #6: If you feel really uncomfortable, practice a bit at home first.

Wear the outfit you plan to wear in public and just practice breastfeeding at home first. Once you get comfortable, venture out there and take a deep breathe. YOU’VE GOT THIS and you’re getting much needed fresh air and contact with other human beings! �� YAY!
