Momsicle a.k.a. Breastmilk Popsicle!

Momsicle a.k.a. Breastmilk Popsicle!

Do you have a teething baby and are desperately looking for something to make both of you feel better?

Don’t worry. We have a solution for you.

Have you ever heard of a momsicle? It’s a breastmilk popsicle and it’s AWESOME for teething babies. We always say that breastmilk is the perfect food. This breastmilk popsicle is the perfect popsicle!

Momsicle - Breastmilk popsicles for babies! These are brilliant!! Check out the awesome baby sized popsicle molds she used.

These popsicles for babies are the perfect size for little hands and filled with nothing but breastmilk so there’s no added sugar or extra ingredients. These can also be made with formula they are great for keeping your baby entertained for a while so they are great to have stashed away in your freezer.

First, why would you go with a breastmilk popsicle over just a regular popsicle you’d buy from the store?

Two very good reasons.

First, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends waiting to start solid foods until your baby is at least 6 months old to lower the possibility of triggering food allergies and to be sure that your baby is developmentally ready to digest solid foods. My babies have all had their first tooth by 5-6 months so we’re dealing with teething pain before we are really into solids. You’ll just have to help younger babies hold these.

Second, store-bought popsicles are absolutely the wrong shape for babies. They are long and skinny and the first thing your baby will do with it is gag herself with it. That’s no good at all.

Fortunately we have a solution for that.

Ready to learn how to make breastmilk popsicles?

My babies have all LOVED breastmilk popsicles when they were teething. it becomes a sensory experience. Babies love to play with them, slide them across the highchair tray, and touch it.

This can get a bit messy because breastmilk melts fast but it’s certainly an easier clean up than when I set my twins loose on a tray full of solid food.

There are several ways to make breastmilk popsicles.

Before I go into my favorite method, I just want to tell you what not to do. So many moms (including me) have made this mistake but it can be dangerous.

  • Don’t use a full size popsicle mold.
  • Don’t improvise.

I shared this idea a few years ago with an improvised method using a pacifier and an egg cup. This was the method I used with my older kids and I never saw anything wrong with it.

It was a bit tricky for my babies to hold on their own but I never thought it was unsafe.

The photo below is the original one I used when this post was first published. This little boy is now 9. It’s crazy how fast time goes by. He looks just like one of my twins too.

I had my kids in two batches. I have three older boys and three younger girls, with a large gap between them. I’m a different mom than I was the first time around.

When my oldest daughter started teething I went to my go-to teething remedy — breastmilk popsicles. It was then that I realized that my old method of making them was a serious choking hazard.

It’s tempting to use what you have on hand, but don’t do it. I have a much easier and safer solution for you.

What’s the solution for your Breastmilk Popsicle?

After playing around with a lot of different options to make breastmilk popsicles I found the perfect solution and three kids later, I haven’t looked back.

I discovered these fantastic baby popsicle molds from Nuby. When I saw these on Amazon I knew I had to try them for a new and improved version of my favorite breastmilk popsicles with my twins.

Baby popsicle mold from Nuby - These are awesome to make homemade popsicles for teething babies or toddlers who just can't manage a whole popsicle.

They quickly became one of my favorite things. These were so easy to use and they have big chunky pieces that make it easy for babies to hold onto. I’m very impressed!

Update: Now that my twins are nearly two, we still use these ALL THE TIME. These make the perfect sized popsicles for babies or toddlers and they are such a fun way to change things up.

The nice thing about the smaller size of these is they freeze in only a few hours.

How to Make a Momsicle

If your baby feels left out at mealtime, momsicles are a great way to give them something to chew on and they do wonders for soothing a teething baby’s sore gums.

You can give babies their first momsicle at about 9 months old because at that point they have the coordination they need to hold them on their own.

If you want to try a momsicle before 9 months we have a few ideas for you that we’ll get to in a minute.

Fill Baby sized popsicle Molds with expressed breastmilk or formula and freeze.

Let your baby chew on a breastmilk popsicle whenever she is showing signs of teething pain.

Want some ideas to change things up?

Older babies may like some extra flavor in their momsicles. To do this, pour a small amount of breastmilk or formula into the popsicle mold, then spoon in a small amount of banana puree, applesauce, or even avocado and top with the remaining milk (this is a fun variation of our baby smoothie bowl)

You can also mix the puree directly into the milk or stir in some rice cereal for a bit of texture.

Get creative with this. Make any flavor combination you want. Just avoid large chunks of fruit for younger babies because the frozen pieces will be a choking hazard for your baby.

Baby Mesh teeters - These are awesome for starting solids with your baby.

If you don’t have a small popsicle mold you can fill an ice-cube tray half way up with breastmilk or formula and freeze. When the breastmilk is frozen (freeze these slightly softer for younger babies), remove it from the tray and pop it in a mesh teether. This is the mesh teether I have and my babies love chewing on it just as much as they love eating whatever I put inside.

Teething feeders are easy for younger babies to hold and are a bit better for younger babies because if they bite off a chunk of frozen milk it just stays inside the mesh.

Have a younger baby that seems interested in solids? If you aren’t quite ready to make that jump you can create a fun frozen treat for your baby by creating a breastmilk slush. This gives him some variety and a bit of practice with the mechanics of eating without introducing foods too early.

Partially freeze a cube of breastmilk. When the breastmilk is partially frozen, remove it from the freezer and break it up with a spoon so it creates a loose slush. If needed, allow the breastmilk to thaw at room temperature for a few minutes.

Use an infant spoon (this is our favorite) to feed the breastmilk slush to your infant. Breastmilk slush lets your baby experiment with new textures and get some exposure to the spoon without adding solid foods to his diet too early.

For older babies who know how to drink from a straw, a thin slushy can be enjoyed that way.
