If you are a nursing mama, you may have noticed two major obstacles in breastfeeding-friendly clothing: (1) they are often really expensive and (2) they are usually not very cute. Well, guess what? I met a fellow Mama Bear named Seana who offered a great solution to my wailin’ and complainin’…

an easy DIY nursing tank for under $4!

Seana takes two tanks and creates one awesome nursing top with just 6 quick cuts and 4 basic stitches! It really is that simple and you, my friends, can make one too!

A nursing tank can be worn as a top on its own (eh hem, with a nursing bra, ladies!) or would be a great layering piece under any outfit. In fact, wearing them under non-nursing-friendly clothes can sometimes transform those pieces into wearable options while out with your hungry nursling. They are cute, as cheap as you want them to be (why not repurpose some old tank tops in your drawer?), and provide decent coverage.

So, let’s dig in! I’m first going to offer you a bonus freebie I created to compliment this post…

… and now I’ll let Seana teach us how to make the tanks!

Gathering your Materials

You’ll need 2 same-sized, jersey-knit tank tops. I found mine for only $1.68 each at Walmart. Technically, other styles of tops could also be used with this tutorial as long as they had similar widths/lengths as each other.

Prepping Tank Top #1

Measure yourself from the armpit to under your breast, going down as far as you’d like top#1 to be. (You’ll want to add 1/4-1/2 an inch for a rolled over hem). For me, this was about 7 inches. Measure and mark this distance on both edges of your top, and then connect the two points to be your cutting guide.

Cut or seam-rip up each side of top #1 until you reach your marks, then cut across the front where desired boob cover line is. Remove cut-out flap and throw into your scrap pile. We will only be using the remaining portion for this project.

Now, do a simple fold-and-stitch hem to keep the boob cover line from rolling on you.

Prepping Tank Top #2

The second tank top is going to come up over the top of your breasts, underneath top #1. Decide how far up you would like it to come and mark/create a cutting line for yourself. I chose about 1-2 inches from the top so I’d have plenty of overlap when top #1 was put over it.

Cut or seam-rip up each side of top #2 until you reach your markings, then cut across the front where desired top line is. This time we will be keeping just the front flap and throwing the back portion into our scrap pile.

Fold and hem the top edge before moving on.

Sewing the Tops Together

Here are what both tanks and their respectable, usable pieces should look like:

Turn top #1 inside out and place both pieces RIGHT sides together. (In other words, the shirt should be completely inside out before you start sewing it together.)

Pin and sew up both sides. I used a zig zag stitch to help keep the stretch.

Finished!! Turn the shirt right-side-out and it should look something like this!
