Essential Oils to Increase Breast Milk Supply

Essential oils can be mighty tools in our mom tool chests. I use them for all sorts of things including boo-boo’s, cleaning, and cooking. Did you know that there are essential oils to increase breast milk supply?

Essential oils work a little differently than the medications or remedies we may be familiar with. Oils support the body in functioning at homeostasis – at balance. We are meant to feed our babies, so essential oils can support us in adequately feeding them.

What essential oils can be used to increase breast milk supply?

When choosing a brand of oil, pay close attention to the quality. Because oils affect every cell in the body within minutes of use, it is important to get the best you can. Look at the testing procedures for the oils – how frequently are the oils tested and in how many ways? Look for therapeutic grade. Look for extraction methods – are the oils cold-pressed or steam-distilled or are solvents used in the process? Don’t let price be your only consideration.

Take care to dilute your oils with a high quality vegetable oil. Essential oils are very light molecules that evaporate very quickly. Carrier oils help hold the oils in place so they can be used. Carrier oils also cut the strength without lessening the ability to aid the body.

A dose of oil for an adult is 2-3 drops every 4-6 hours as needed, used in the way that works best for your situation. For chronic conditions, just once or twice a day. It’s a good idea to use them just after a nursing session so your body can process the oils, though the amount that would pass into breast milk would be small compared to the original application.

To assist your body with increasing milk supply, look for Clary Sage, Fennel, or Geranium oils. Basil and Lavender can assist as well. Dilute 10 drops in 2 tablespoons carrier oil and rub on breasts 2-3 times daily. Avoid Peppermint and Jasmine oils as they can decrease milk supply.
