With Zoë, my supply was very low and I ended up supplementing with formula for a few months, so every ounce was like liquid gold. If I was even able to pump two ounces to store, I considered myself lucky.
I’ve been fortunate enough with Kaylee to be able to pump about 5 ounces every morning and still have a good enough supply to meet her demands. So far, she has been 100% breastfed.
Now that Kaylee is sleeping for several hours every night, I wake up with very full breasts. So every morning after she eats, I pump and either stick a bottle in the fridge (which is most days now that I’m doing a lot more freelance writing and Brian is watching the girls in the morning) or I freeze it for later use.
Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve discovered that our refrigerator doesn’t keep a very good temperature. I’ve had to dump four bottles of sour breast milk down the drain after being in the fridge for just over 24 hours!
It makes me sick to my stomach every time I have to do it. I made the mistake of tasting it twice just to “make sure” it was actually sour. Big mistake. I will never do that again!
From now on, if I even have to question it, it goes down the drain. But, that doesn’t make it any less painful to “waste” something that’s so valuable…
